Organic Farming Cost-Share Program At Risk

Federal spending cuts proposed by some members of Congress could eliminate a program popular among organic farmers.

THE DETAILS: The Republican Study Committee, a group of 175 House Republicans that tend to vote more conservatively than other members of their party, published the “Spending Reduction Act of 2011.” The proposed spending cuts include the elimination of the National Organic Certification Cost-Share Program, a program set up to reimburse farmers up to 75 percent of the costs required to pay for organic certification. The proposed cuts to the National Organic Certification Cost-Share Program are the only cuts to the agriculture funding in the bill, with the exception of $14 million in cuts to the USDA Sugar program, designed to keep domestic sugar prices lower than those of sugar imports.

Monsanto Squeaks One By Organics

Some unfortunate news today in what looks like Monstanto’s passing of approval for GMO Alfalfa with the USDA.

An informative article over at the Huffington Post has the details: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ronnie-cummins/the-organic-elite-surrend_b_815346.html

All About Mexican Organics

Lola Milholland wrote an excellent article about farming in Mexico and specifically Mexican Organics for PCC Natural Markets. Learn more about what our neighbors down south grow and their food safety regulations. Truly an excellent read.

Help Stop Monsanto GMO Alfalfa!

You may be familiar with the Monsanto Company, an organization which has created tons of genetically modified crops that have undermined small farmers, and damaged organic crops and eco-systems. Now Monsanto is moving to push for approval from the USDA of yet another GMO crop – Alfalfa. Secretary Vilsack and the Obama administration are only days away from approving Monsanto’s genetically modified alfalfa which means that organic, non-chemically designed crops are at series risk of contamination. As data suggests, GMO crops are incredibly dangerous to consumer and have the potential to destroy species of crops.

You can help send a message to Secretary Vilsack and the Obama administration by signing this petition and calling your Senator to voice your thoughts. Help put a stop to Monsanto to ensure that healthy, safe, organic crops are preserved and continue to make their way to your doorstep.

We appreciate your support!

For more information about GMO’s, we put together an article a while back with some great information. Check it out here.

Video Tutorial for New Ordering System

To help with the transition to our handy new ordering system, we put together this short video guide to make selecting your favorite box type and building a custom box that much easier.

Build a Box and More About Our New System

Two things you may not know about the new system:

  1. You can build an order from the ground up.  The new ‘build from scratch share’ is designed for those looking to fully customize each order.  As with all orders, the $5 delivery fee applies and there is a minimum order of $25.  To change to this option, or to change from one box to another, use the ‘select subscription’ button at the bottom of the ‘summary’ box on your account page.
  2. Once you log into your account, you can view your itemized order by clicking on the ‘web store’ button in the upper right-hand corner of the page.  From there, you can easily delete items you don’t want, adjust the quantity of each item in your order and add more items from the web store.  Please note the web store hours below.

A few other housekeeping details:

  • If you use a bookmark to get to your Terra Organics account page, you will need to update the bookmark to the following url: http://csa.farmigo.com/account/terra-organics/2010-2011
  • We are still working on a solution for those of you that previously had standing orders of eggs, bananas and other staples.  In the meantime, you will need to add these items to each order during web store hours.
  • The web store is looking more visually appealing these days, as we work to add images for all of the items.  We are also working to input producer information so that farm name, location, website and other information is readily available and associated with each item in the web store.
  • The information contained in the order confirmation email and the schedule of its arrival in your inbox has changed.  An email with your order details is being sent at approximately the same time the web store opens for business – instead of two days before your delivery – and only if you are set to receive a delivery for the upcoming week.  Payments are also posting the night of your delivery, instead of two days prior.

One other highlight of the new system is that, for the first time, every item is individually priced.  This level of transparency is most beneficial for those that either, a) might not want to spend $5.00 on a pint of strawberries with the knowledge that it represents 1/5th of the total box cost, or, b) want to be able to perform price comparisons between us and the neighborhood box store.

We hope that you will take a look at the changes, and tell us what you think.

Sincerely,

The Terra Organics Team

A New Year, A New Terra Organics

If you were on vacation for the last week or two, welcome home!  We are excited by the progress on our end of getting everything moved over to the new system.  And generally the feedback has been positive.  If you haven’t logged into your account yet, or if you didn’t read through the message last week, please read on.

New Account Management Page

To access your account, click here to be redirected to the new sign-in page.  When asked for your username and password, enter your email address in the username field, and “farmfresh” in the password field.  You will then be prompted to establish a new password.  (if the system does not recognize your email, please send us a message.)

Once logged in, you will notice that things look a little different.  You’ll see several options on a menu bar at the top of the page:

  • “History” – This will show your order history.  Since we are on a new system this may not show any order history yet.  However, any balance you had on your account previously will have been transferred into the new system
  • “Contact Info” – Here you can edit your contact info and delivery address if needed
  • “Vacation” – If you are going on vacation, list the dates you will be gone, and the system will automatically generate an order for you once you return
  • “Make a Payment” – Here you will need to select a payment option and enter billing information.  THIS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE YOUR NEXT ORDER

You’ll also notice a box to the right of these options labeled “Summary.” This will list your next delivery date, delivery day, and box type.  You will have to enter the web store to view your itemized order.

Updates to Customer Policies

Please note a few changes to our billing options and policies:

  • We now offer the option to pay with an electronic check, which means your payment will be electronically debited from your bank account.  If you have been paying with a check up until now, this will eliminate the need to remember to leave a check out each time for our driver to pick up!
  • We are discontinuing the $1 credit card payment convenience charge
  • We will no longer be managing substitutions based on your list of “deleted items” or email requests.  We feel that nobody knows what you want better than you do, and the new system allows you to easily remove any item(s) from the standard box contents that you don’t want and replace them with an item, or items, you do want.  You can also freely add items from the web store, including produce items that are not a part of your standard box as well as eggs with more options to be added over time.
  • To make adjustments to your order, follow the link to the web store in the upper right hand corner of your account page.  If you are satisfied with the contents of your order as they are listed below, then you don’t need to do anything!
  • When you enter the web store to make any adjustments to your order, you will notice there is a $5 delivery fee.  This fee has always been built into the cost of your box, but with the new system we must display this charge so that it gets calculated into the total cost of your order.  This also helps lower the price on all items available to include in your order
  • Due to the new customization process, any add-ons that have been part of your standing order in the past have not been transferred into the new system.  You will now need to login and add these items to your order each time you want them.  For certain items (like eggs and juicing carrots), you do have the option to add them to your standing order. These items are listed as “options” not as subscriptions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we complete this transition.  We welcome any feedback on the new system, and, as always, are happy to respond to any questions or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

The Terra Organics Team
